A chemical peel uses a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. Chemical peels can effectively improve a wide variety of skin conditions including: fine lines, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and sun damaged skin. At your complimentary consultation the nurse will evaluate your skin condition and obtain your expectations for the procedure. Depending on your skin type and your desired level of recovery, the nurse will help you determine a personalized treatment plan. Most patients prefer the “no downtime” peel. This is a physician strength glycolic acid peel that incorporates buffering agents to minimize any redness. With this peel patients experience all the benefits of glycolic acid without dealing with a noticeable recovery.
Procedure – Chemical Peel Procedure
First the face is cleansed with a special prep solution. Then, depending on the type and strength of the chemical peel, the acid is applied to the face for a certain amount of time. During the procedure there can be a tingling or stinging sensation however the acid will be neutralized within minutes. Patients are advised to avoid Retin-A products for 2-3 days before and after the procedure. Our nurse will also review good sun protection practices and provide sample sunscreens when necessary.
Recovery – Chemical Peel Recovery
The recovery after chemical peels depends on the type and strength of the peel. As stated above, most patients choose a “no downtime” peel. This type of peel does not interfere with daily routines or schedules because patients only experience mild pinkness. The dead skin cells are microscopically shedding away to reveal healthier, more youthful skin. This exfoliating process continues to smooth and rejuvenate the skin with each additional peel.
